It can be tough to achieve the optimal work-life balance, especially in today’s technologically prevalent society. Employees are expected normally to put in 40 hours a week, but when bosses ask them to complete assignments at home or answer emails on the weekends, it can suddenly become a lot more than 40 hours. Whether you are the CEO or an entry-level employee, there are a few things you can do to have a more balanced life.
The first thing everyone needs to learn how to do is unplugging from technology once in a while. While smartphones and apps have made some jobs easier than ever, these features can also bring unnecessary stress. You should not answer work emails when you are having dinner with your family. Put the phone away, or keep it in another room entirely so that you can enjoy some much-needed relaxation.
You also need to determine what activities are most important for you when restricting your work-life balance. When you break down your day into small chunks, you will likely find you have a couple hours that could be better utilized. Instead of going out to happy hour with some coworkers, perhaps you could go straight home to spend time with family or just kick back and relax. Additionally, you should monitor how much time you spend browsing the internet and going on social media to see where you can cut back.
Many people find relaxation in mediation and exercise. You should do the same to see if it does anything for you. Even going on an easy 30-minute jog can work wonders. It gives you time when you are not staring at a phone, and the release of endorphins can help alleviate stress after a long day.
It may also be good to change certain habits to give yourself more time. For example, if you are the spouse who always does the grocery shopping, then perhaps you could give that chore to your husband or wife. You could trade off every other week so that you get a couple more hours to work with in the week.
Finally, it is important to remember when altering your work-life balance to start small and grow from there. You do not want to try to cut social media out of your life entirely. However, if you spend 30 minutes a day on Facebook, then start by cutting back to only 15 minutes. Once you are comfortable there, you can cut it further to 10 minutes. Every little bit helps.
